What is primary rhinoplasty?
Primary rhinoplasty is the first nasal surgery for patients who have not previously undergone nose surgery. The aim is to refine nasal shape in harmony with facial proportions while preserving breathing function.
Every nose has unique anatomy; therefore every plan is personalised. Skin thickness, cartilage and bone structure and patient expectations are evaluated together.
Who is a good candidate?
Patients with a drooping tip, a nasal hump, a wide or asymmetric tip, deviated bones, or breathing difficulties — and whose nasal development is complete (typically over 18) — are suitable candidates.
Overall health must be appropriate for surgery; chronic conditions and medications are reviewed pre-operatively.
Open vs. closed technique
In the closed technique, all incisions remain inside the nostrils with no visible external scarring. In the open technique, a small incision is added on the columella, giving the surgeon a wider view.
Choice of technique depends on nasal anatomy, the scope of the planned change and the surgical goal.
Recovery, step by step
A cast or splint is worn during the first week; swelling and bruising peak in this period. From the second week, most patients return to social life and light work.
Strenuous exercise, sauna and prolonged sun exposure should be avoided for 4–6 weeks. The final result becomes visible over 6–12 months as tissues settle.

- No, the surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and the patient feels nothing. Mild pressure may be felt for a few days post-op and is easily managed with prescribed pain relief.
- Are nasal packs used after surgery?
- Modern technique uses silicone splints rather than classic packs. These splints allow breathing and are typically removed within 5–7 days.
- When is the result final?
- Most of the external shape is clear by month 3; finer details and the tip settle into their final shape over 6–12 months.
